In the State of Alabama it is required that an individual be at least 18 years of age to obtain a CDL or haul any type of placarded hazardous materials. Individuals under the age of 21 can only operate a commercial motor vehicle within the state of Alabama.
Listed below are descriptions of the different types of commercial motor vehicles and what type of commercial license is required to operate each vehicle class.
• CDL Class A – Articulated Vehicles or combination vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,001 pounds or over and hauling a trailer over 10,001
• CDL Class B – Straight truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,000 or more and no trailer or hauling a trailer less than 10,001 pounds.
• CDL Class D – Private passenger, regular operator
