State of Minnesota CDL Requirements
In the state of Minnesota there are two definitions for commercial motor vehicle that a driver should be aware of when it comes to the applicability of the CDL laws in MN. When motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used to transport cargo or passengers, the motor vehicle is considered a CMV if:
- The vehicle has a gross vehicle Wight of more than 26,000 pounds
- The vehicle is towing a unit with a gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds and the combination of the two vehicles has a GVW of 26,000
- A bus carrying more than 15 passengers
- The vehicle is of any size or weight and is used to transport Hazardous Materials that are placarded
- The vehicle is positively identified as a school bus
The minimum age requirement of a person operating a CMV that does not carry Hazardous Materials or Passengers is 16 in the state of Minnesota. You must be 18 years of age to carry passengers, and must be 21 years of age to carry hazardous materials. You must also be 21 years of age to cross state lines.
