State of Mississippi CDL Requirements

In the state of Mississippi there are four different classes of commercial driver's licenses (CDL). Listed below are descriptions each.

  • Class A: is required for any combination vehicle (truck/trailer) that has a gross vehicle weight that exceeds 26,001 pounds.
  • Class B: is required for any vehicle that is a straight truck with no trailer, and has a GVW of 26,001 pounds. It is also required for any vehicle that is carrying more than 15 passengers. However, in order to carry passengers you must have a passenger (P) endorsement as well.
  • Class C: is required to haul hazardous materials, but does not meet the weight restrictions
  • Class D: required to haul any vehicle not hauling hazardous materials, and does not meet the weight restriction, but is used for commercial use.

Applicants must be at least 17 years of age to acquire a CDL. Applicants must be 21 to legally cross state lines in a commercial vehicle and must also be 21 to haul hazardous materials. You are required to bring a copy of a valid Mississippi driver’s license, social security card, and a valid Department of Transportation Medical Examination card when applying for a CDL permit.
