State of North Carolina CDL Requirements

In the state of North Carolina you must first choose what commercial drivers’ license you wish to hold. Applicants can choose from a list of the following:

Class A -

  • For any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is more than 10,000 pounds.

Class B -

  • Any straight truck with two or more axles and a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.
  • Any vehicle with two or more axles and a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, pulling a vehicle with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less.
  • A single vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) if the GVWR is 26,001 pounds or more.

Class C -

  • Any vehicle with a GVWR of less than 26,001 pounds transporting hazardous materials for which placarding is required.
  • A single vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) if the GVWR is less than 26,001 pounds.

Once an applicant determines what type of license is needed, the next step is to obtain a temporary instructional permit. You can obtain a commercial permit by completing a series of tests directly related to the type of license you wish to pursue. Permits are valid for a period of 6 months.

In order to apply for the issuance of a CDL you will need to bring the following documents.

·       Proof of Residency

·       Proof of age and identity

·       Proof of Liability Insurance

·       Proof of clear driving record

o   License must not be suspended, disqualified or revoked

o   Must not currently hold more than one driver license

To complete the licensing process a road skills test must be completed by a state licensed examiner.

Fees include:

·       Application Fee $30.00

·       CDL Endorsement $3 per endorsement

·       Learner Permit $15.00
