State of South Dakota CDL Requirements

The state of South Dakota requires that you be 18 years of age or older, have a valid South Dakota drivers license and obtain a medical certificate to obtain a CDL. However, you must be at least 21 years of age to cross state lines or haul placarded hazardous materials. All CDL applicants will also be required to pass a general knowledge exam and a skills test.

The following vehicle classifications require a CDL license to operate:

Class A CDL

  • Any combination of vehicles with gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the GVWR of the vehicles being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.

Class B CDL

  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR

Class C CDL

  • Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials.
