State of Utah CDL Requirements

In the state of Utah you are required be at least 18 years of age to qualify for a CDL endorsement but will be restricted to driving intrastate and you will not be able to apply for hazardous, materials, passenger, or school bus endorsements. If you are 21 years of age you will be able to apply for all endorsements and drive across state lines. All CDL applicants will be required to pass a physical examination, knowledge test, and a skills test.

The following vehicle classifications require a CDL license to operate:

Class A CDL

  • Allows you to operate combination vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) exceeding 26,000 pounds, provided the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed exceeds 10,000 pounds.

Class B CDL

  • Allows you to operate single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds. The vehicle in tow must not exceed 10,000 pounds.

Class C CDL

  • Allows you to operate vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials, that do not meet the criteria for Class A or B above fall under this classification.
