State of Alabama CDL Requirements
To get your CDL, you must be:
Additionally, you must have:
a non-CDL driver’s license
proof of citizenship or legal presence in the U.S.
proof of your social security number
a valid DOT medical examiner’s card
You cannot have:
a license from any other state
a suspended, revoked, denied, or cancelled license
a DUI conviction in the 24 months preceding application, or a warrant for your arrest. Generally speaking, having a police record or prior arrests will not disqualify you.
A high school diploma or GED may or may not be necessary, depending on the school you enroll in.
The Process
To receive your CDL, you must meet the above requirements and pass the Alabama knowledge test(s) for the CDL license you want.
After you pass your test(s), you will receive a CDL temporary instruction permit that will allow you to practice driving with a qualified CDL holder at the school of your choice. You must wait 14 days between receiving your permit and applying for your license.
Pay your state fees, and pass your practical skills tests: a vehicle inspection test, the basic controls test, and the road test. The skills tests must be taken in a vehicle representative of the one you will be driving once licensed. Return to the DMV counter for your documentation to be processed. Your license will be given to you then or mailed.
